Sydney community group Hands off Glebe, with the support of the Glebe Society, is launching its latest booklet, The Wentworth Report, at Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday 12 December at 6.30pm.
The booklet presents the case to save the public housing complex at 82 Wentworth Park Road in Glebe from demolition.
“Renovating the existing building would produce great cost savings, means tenants do not have to be evicted and does not, as demolition does, reduce the supply of public housing forMed several years,” co-author Dr Hannah Middleton from Hands off Glebe said.
“We are asking the NSW State Government to withdraw its plan to demolish and rebuild 82 Wentworth Park Road and to instead develop a plan, in consultation with the former residents, to build additional housing at the rear of the site and to renovate the existing dwellings to deliver improved living conditions for a lower government financial investment as well as protecting environmental and social values.
“Good planning is not one-dimensional. It takes account of environment, community, heritage, identity and value for money. Good management looks after public assets rather than neglecting and then demolishing them,” Dr Middleton said.
The Wentworth Report will be launched by Cllr Sylvie Ellsmore supported by architect Hector Abrahams
